The Mother Wound

Stone from Avebury stone circle

Soon after reading ‘Mary Magdalene Revealed’ (see previous post) I fell into a feeling of deep sadness. I’d been depressed twice before, so I knew the signs, but this was different. This felt more like a gaping hole, an emptiness. A deep loneliness. A wound that wouldn’t heal.

I went to see my friend who taught the shamanic apprenticeship for a healing session that included rose essential oil, flower essences that she created herself, and freshly cut roses.

At one point during the session I held a beautiful rose in my hands and she guided me to think about my sadness and ask the rose what this feeling was trying to tell me.

I tuned in with no expectations. I allowed my grief to rise up. And then I heard, clear as a bell, “This is to show you how deep the Mother Wound is.”

I knew that this meant more than just childhood baggage with my own mother. This was much, much bigger.

This was the gaping, raw wound that we created when humans cut ourselves off from the Great Mother herself. The Mother from which we all are born and to whom we all return upon our death.

The Land is alive and keeps us alive. She is full of wisdom, available to us any time if we only ask for it.

And so I asked Her for a sign. What was I to do next?

Soon what rose within me was the feeling that I should be offering women’s circles. Not having much experience with them myself, I balked. But the feeling wouldn’t go away so I signed up for a self-guided course through a women’s mystery school.

And while I learned how to hold transformational space, the same school sent out a newsletter about a trip to Avalon that they hold every year. A retreat where women do healing work with essential oils and visit the sacred sights of Glastonbury and Avebury.

I’d never heard of Avebury but as soon as I read the description I knew this was part of my path to healing.

Needless to say I signed up. And what followed was one of the most powerful, beautiful and challenging times of my life.
