What is a Pilgrimage?

What is a pilgrimage? And why go on one?

“A pilgrimage is a journey, often into an unknown or foreign place, where a person goes in search of new or expanded meaning about their self, others, nature, or a higher good through the experience. It can lead to a personal transformation, after which the pilgrim returns to daily life.” (Wikipedia)

People may travel to a shrine or other important location that pertains to their spiritual or religious beliefs. However, the journey can also be a metaphor into their own spiritual awakening.

In my case, it was an interest in both outcomes, plus a longing to connect with my ancestors, that led me to Avalon and Avebury in England last month.

I’m happy to say that I found all three. But as a result, I’m finding the return to “daily life” quite difficult. Especially as I've only just arrived home.

But I’m slowly coming out of the chrysalis. I’ll share what I’ve learned, step by step.

The path of the initiate.
